Once in high school our music teacher gave us a little bit different sort of a thing to do. I recall her being somehow busy with something else, therefore it was partially an independent assignment. She played us, several times, a well known song from our childhood and told us to pay attention on the way the female artist emphasizes and phrases the vocals.
Of course she also gave us the sheet music for said song and then tried to get us mimic the way the artist sang it. We didn't do very good job with it. But Sade Adu's phraseology and tone of voice did leave a permanent mark in my mind. In time to time I still go, badly over doing it: "No need to ASK, he's a smooth operator."
