A tip for all of my fellow amateur aquarelle artists: If the paper gets all crumbled because of the moist, iron it straighter. Yes, with that iron you would use for your shirt. Try first on a less significant painting if unsure. You won't be likely to get the paper as straight as before applying the paint and water.

I remember straightening crumpled aquarelles by wiping the backside of a dried painting with a slightly moist rag or cloth and then putting the painting under pressure until it dries. You obviously need to apply even pressure on the whole surface to get the best result.
I think I've done that too, ages ago. My method is pretty quick though. :D
Your method has its good sides yes.
It can also go so very wrong. ;)
